In a country as prosperous and proud as Canada, it’s difficult to accept a painful truth: some of our veterans—the very people who served and sacrificed for this nation—are going hungry.
It shouldn’t be this way.
Veterans gave their time, their health, and, in many cases, pieces of themselves that can never be replaced. They trained for danger, stood between us and harm, and upheld our freedoms. The very idea that any of them should have to rely on a food bank to survive is not just heartbreaking—it’s shameful.
And yet, thank goodness veteran food banks exist.
The Safety Net No One Talks About
Organizations like the Veterans Association Food Bank in Alberta are doing more than just handing out food. They’re handing out hope, stability, and a sense of community when systems fail those who once stood for us. These food banks provide hampers, housing aid, mental health resources, and even peer dinners—spaces where veterans can connect with people who understand them.
They’re filling a gap that should never have existed in the first place. While we work toward long-term policy reform and better support networks, these frontline charities are keeping veterans alive, housed, and heard.
Gratitude for Those Who Step Up
It’s easy to say “Support the troops” when it’s trending, or on a holiday. But organizations like VAFB are doing the hard work every day. They don’t just salute the uniform—they serve the person inside it, long after the parades are over.
While it’s a national shame that veteran food banks are needed, it’s a national blessing that they are there—staffed by people who care, backed by communities who give, and built by veterans helping veterans.
