VETS Canada | Ground Support for Veterans

Help from coast to coast to coast. VETS Canada is a federally registered non-profit charity with hundreds of dedicated volunteers across the country, most of who are ex-military/RCMP. VETS Canada has evolved from mostly assisting homeless veterans to also providing support to those facing difficulties of any kind. That could mean the inability to afford groceries or a power bill, or an emotional or mental health crisis, VETS Canada provides much needed support to veterans across the country.

VETS Canada | Ground Support for Veterans

VETS Canada - began as a grassroots movement in 2010, founded by veteran Jim Lowther and his wife Debbie in Halifax. They witnessed firsthand the growing number of veterans “slipping through the cracks” and established the charity to support homeless and at-risk Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP veterans ([vetscanada.org][1]). Since then, they’ve grown into a federally registered organization with hundreds of volunteers coast-to-coast, successfully housing nearly 1,000 veterans, providing direct financial support, and assisting over 4,500 individuals in crisis ([vetscanada.org][1]).

Their services have expanded far beyond emergency housing. VETS Canada now operates drop-in centers in Edmonton, Ottawa, and Dartmouth, offering essentials like food, clothing, rent assistance, and medical bill relief ([vetscanada.org][2]). They also run peer-led initiatives—most notably Guitars for Vets, which equips veterans with musical tools and virtual lessons as a therapeutic outlet—alongside specialized support for LGBTQ2+ veterans, funded by the LGBT Purge Fund ([vetscanada.org][3]). Their unwavering “ground support” approach ensures that veterans receive both practical resources and compassionate, veteran-led peer care.
