As the first Japanese Canadian elected to a provincial legislature in Canada, Tsubouchi’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to public service.
A Groundbreaking Politician
David Tsubouchi’s political journey is nothing short of inspiring. Born on August 20, 1951, in Toronto, David’s parents, who were Japanese Canadian and interned during WWII, instilled in him the value of perseverance. David went on to graduate from Osgoode Hall Law School, and his political career began in 1995, when he became the first Japanese Canadian elected to Ontario’s provincial legislature.
During his tenure, Tsubouchi held several prominent cabinet positions, including Minister of Community and Social Services, Solicitor General, and Minister of Culture. His leadership helped shape key policies, benefiting Ontario’s citizens and establishing him as a dedicated servant of the public.
Beyond Politics: A Continued Commitment to Service
After retiring from politics in 2003, Tsubouchi continued his leadership journey. He worked as associate counsel at Miller Thomson LLP, founded Deduce International Markets Inc., and chaired the Ontario College of Trades. His role on boards such as the OMERS Pension Fund and the Ontario Arts Council further demonstrates his commitment to community service.
Tsubouchi’s memoir, Gambatte: Generations of Perseverance and Politics, chronicles his personal and family journey, focusing on his family’s experience during the internment of Japanese Canadians and his life in politics.
